Pratap Singh was the son of a poor shepherd in Rajasthan. He was a cheerful young lad, who went to school with his friends. His school was a 40 minute walk from his house, but when his friendís joined him, he felt happy and the distance didnít seem that much. They all walked together with their little tiffen boxes, singing to themselves a film song. One of them was a 10 year old little boy. He too would join with the rest of them, but would turn off at the corner to his school. He studied at a special school for the blind children called the Ďblind schoolí. All the children in the group made sure Aslam reached his blind school on time and would take him with utmost care but the school that they all went to was an ordinary Government school in the rural areas of Ajmer.

It didnít even have a brick structure but it would soon the principal had told them. The children got a free mid day meal scheme, but then those that couldnít have breakfast in the morning carried it with them. In the evenings the group would pick Aslam on their way back because all the children stayed together in the same slum locality. The group at times would have minimized over the evening because some children would have stayed back at school to attend remedial classes. Ajmer was becoming literate, even though it was a slow process.
